Who We Are

History of Turnbull Nursing Home

Turnbull Nursing Home was established in 1899 by William Wallace Turnbull (1828-1899), a well-known Saint John businessman and philanthropist. The Saint John Home for Incurables, as it was known originally, took over the premises of The Kent Marine Hospital, the first hospital in New Brunswick.

Turnbull wanted to create a safe and caring environment where the sick and elderly could take refuge. At that time, these people had nowhere to go but the poor house, which was often crowded and unfavourable. The original purpose of the facility, as expressed by Mr. Turnbull was, “For that class of sufferers whose diseases are pronounced incurable. That no one shall be disqualified as a beneficiary on account of race, sex, age, creed, or colour.”

Mr. Turnbull’s philanthropic legacy lives on at Turnbull Nursing Home today. Our skilled and compassionate team provide the same kind of benevolent care that our residents have been receiving for more than 120 years.

Residents are the heart and soul of Turnbull Nursing Home. Our model of care allows for personal autonomy and independence when possible, and for as long as possible. This truly fosters a dynamic environment that benefits the physical and emotional wellbeing of residents.

We want our residents and their loved ones to feel a sense of pride, comfort, and community when they step through our doors.

A message from Joy Pettinger, Administrator

Turnbull Nursing Home has played an important role in the delivery of supportive nursing care to seniors for more than one hundred years. We are nestled in the city’s south end within our original building, constructed in 1882.

We are a 50-bed not-for-profit organization with a primary focus on compassionate care in a resident-focused small home environment.

We strive every day to ensure our residents feel respected and dignified. We take a personalized approach to care and include residents loved ones in the process where possible.

Welcome to our website and thank you for considering Turnbull Nursing Home. We are a home with a proud heritage of caring.
